| Wingscraft provides part time flexible home based work opportunities for older Singapore women who wish to earn supplementary income for themselves and their families. This community project is the brainchild of WINGS (www.wings.sg) – a non profit organisation dedicated to promoting successful ageing in the areas of health, finance and self esteem for Singapore women from all walks of life and who are over 40 years old.
Through our efforts at WINGs, we saw that women were often selfless caregivers – looking after husbands, children, parents, in-laws and siblings-often at the expense of their present and future well being. Caught up in daily domestic responsibilities, many were ill prepared for old age with meager savings of their own, little or no marketable job skills and socially disconnected from a fast changing world.
Knowing this need, a few energetic volunteers supported by wonderful administrative staff, set the Wingscraft project in motion. To date, we have a small and growing band of talented and committed ladies (from 40 to 70 plus years old), who use their sewing skills to proudly create a range of pretty and novel handcrafted products. Inspiration for our products comes from everywhere and anywhere – our volunteers, clients, books, window and web shopping, our own needs and desires. Key elements of our products are Asian ethnic influences, contemporary accents, quirky themes that converge into quality hand sewn items. Our products are bought by individuals and corporate customers who appreciate that whimsical personal touch that only handmade workmanship can offer. Beyond the work opportunities that Wingscraft gives our ladies, it also delivers intangible but equally important benefits. Our women are not simply treated as production workers relentlessly meeting output targets. Instead, they are very much encouraged and valued as members of a creative circle that contribute design ideas, technical advice and suggestions on the packaging and other aspects of the products. It is a very proud and rewarding moment for our women when they see what they make being showcased and sold in chic downtown shops or to notable corporate clients. They begin to realise that no matter what their age or background, they have the skills and potential to be so much more than they thought possible. Their work in Wingscraft gives them happiness, purpose and increased self worth. Our project is fairly new (since Aug 2008) so our catalogue is increasing as creative ideas flourish into exciting new products. We hope you like what you see on our website, that you will make a purchase or two to support our social enterprise and visit us again for more. Enjoy! |
